North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is making sure that the future of AI is as inclusive as it is innovative.
Supported by a $1 million dollar Google.org grant, NCCU’s new Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research (IAIER) will offer up to 200 students unprecedented exploration of AI through classes, hands-on projects, and invaluable mentorship. This is the first program of its kind at any historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the nation.
Set to launch in 2025, IAIER reflects a forward-thinking approach to leadership in one of today’s most dynamic fields, ensuring that underrepresented voices play a central role in shaping AI’s development. The initiative builds on NCCU’s strong ties to North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park — a premier center for technology and innovation. Students will have access to state-of-the-art tools, industry connections, and professional opportunities that will prepare them to excel in AI-driven industries. The institute will also foster collaboration with other HBCUs, industry leaders, and research partners across the country.
NCCU celebrated with a campus event on December 11, which included representatives from partner grant recipients, Google and university leadership, local officials, and students. NCCU Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon said, “This partnership will prepare our students with the tools and knowledge to lead the AI field, while developing technologies that benefit society at large. Through collaboration with corporations, local community colleges and universities, and the Research Triangle Park network, the institute will serve as an epicenter for workforce development, research and innovation, empowering students to lead one of the most impactful fields of our time and help make AI a force for good in the world.”
Google.org’s support for NCCU is part of its broader commitment to education in North Carolina, having invested nearly $2 million statewide.
