Partnership Boosts Diversity in Medical Education

Last week, private medical school Des Moines University (DMU) and historically Black Voorhees University announced a new partnership designed to help more students advance their education in health science fields.

Under the agreement, Voorhees students gain exclusive benefits, including guaranteed interviews, opportunities for concurrent credits, and reserved seats in select programs.

This is DMU’s first collaboration with a historically Black university, reinforcing its commitment to prepare compassionate, highly skilled professionals while expanding access to underrepresented groups in health sciences.

In a press release, Voorhees University President Ronnie Hopkins said, “This partnership reflects our commitment to providing Voorhees students with exceptional opportunities for academic and professional growth … By collaborating with Des Moines University, we are empowering our students to pursue careers in health professions that will not only enhance their futures but also contribute to improving the well-being of communities nationwide.”

Voorhees students who meet DMU’s admission requirements are guaranteed interviews for consideration of admission to programs such as the doctor of biomedical sciences, doctor of physical therapy, doctor of podiatric medicine, doctor of osteopathic medicine, master of science in anatomy, master of science in biomedical sciences, and master of science in physician assistant studies.

Qualifying Voorhees students will have the opportunity to earn credits simultaneously toward their undergraduate degree at Voorhees and their graduate degree at DMU in the doctor of occupational therapy, master of health care administration, or master of public health programs. Additionally, they can begin as early as the summer between their sophomore and junior years.

The partnership also guarantees one spot each year in DMU’s doctor of occupational therapy and Health PASS programs for qualified Voorhees students who meet criteria such as strong grades, relevant work or observational experience, supportive faculty recommendations, and notable academic accomplishments.

In the same press release, Angela L. Walker Franklin, PhD., president and CEO of DMU said, “DMU’s partnership with Voorhees not only increases access to health science degrees, but also follows our mission to educate a diverse group of highly competent and compassionate students who will improve lives in our global community … Together, we are expanding our educational horizons and proving our commitment to inclusivity, innovation and academic excellence. We are paving the way to a brighter future for all students.”
