Collegiate athletics is in the middle of one of the most significant transformations in its history. New models for revenue-sharing, name, image, and likeness (NIL), and the transfer portal have reshaped the landscape. The expectations placed on student-athletes—and on the institutions that support them—have never been higher or more complex. And at the same time, the programs that are thriving are the ones that refuse to accept that things have to be done the way they have always been done.

We are proud to present the recipients of the 2026 Insight Into Academia Excellence in Innovation Award: College Athletics, honoring colleges and universities where bold, forward-thinking ideas are redefining what it means to support student-athletes and staff and to advance the field.

These are institutions that identified a gap, need, or opportunity and built something better in response. Some have transformed how student-athletes are developed as leaders, professionals, and people. Others have reimagined what academic support can accomplish when it is organized around completion rather than eligibility. Several honorees have built partnerships that extend the reach of athletics deep into their surrounding communities, and others are pioneering new approaches to developing coaches, mental fitness, nutrition access, and the art of telling an athletics program’s story.

“What strikes us about this year’s honorees is how creative their ideas are,” says Lenore Pearlstein, co-publisher of Insight Into Academia. “These are not programs that required enormous budgets or major infrastructure investments. Instead, they required someone who looked at a familiar problem and decided to solve it differently.”

Selected from institutions across the country and every level of intercollegiate competition, this year’s Innovation Award winners represent a remarkable range of approaches united by a shared conviction: that collegiate athletics is most powerful when it serves the whole person, strengthens the institution, and gives back to the communities that surround it. Through their stories, readers will find practical models, replicable ideas, and a vivid picture of what collegiate athletics can look like when innovation is treated not as a luxury, but as a responsibility.
