For more than three decades, Dr. Sidney G. Carthell has dedicated his career to one mission: helping students not only succeed, but thrive.
At Murray State University, that mission has taken shape through innovative programs, strategic leadership, and a deep commitment to student development. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Dr. Carthell brings a level of discipline, vision, and service to higher education that has left a lasting mark on both campus and community.
As a leader in student affairs, Dr. Carthell has played a critical role in shaping initiatives that strengthen student achievement, leadership development, and retention. His work is not just about supporting students in the moment—it’s about building systems that sustain their success long after they leave campus.
One of his most impactful contributions is the Emerging Scholars Institute, a leadership and retention program he founded and directs. The program has earned recognition from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, the Murray State Board of Regents, and organizations beyond the university—serving as a model for how intentional programming can transform student outcomes.
But what truly distinguishes Dr. Carthell is his ability to connect.
He brings people together—students, faculty, staff, and community partners—creating environments where relationships drive results. His leadership is rooted in understanding, mentorship, and a genuine investment in the success of others.
That commitment extends well beyond campus.
Dr. Carthell currently serves as Chair of the Human Rights Commission for the City of Murray, Kentucky, and is a former president of United Way–Murray/Calloway County. Through these roles, he continues to champion equity, service, and community engagement, reinforcing the idea that higher education leaders play a vital role both inside and outside institutional walls.
For Dr. Carthell, student success is deeply personal.
In his own words:
“Student success means helping students recognize their potential and providing the support, opportunities, and leadership experiences that allow them to thrive. After 33 years in higher education, I remain deeply committed to empowering students to lead, graduate, and make a meaningful impact in their communities.”
It’s this unwavering dedication—to students, to community, and to the future—that defines Dr. Carthell as a Higher Ed Hero.
