Five Voices, One Impact: Why Dr. Cristy Tower-Gilchrist Is a Higher Ed Hero

At Emory University, one name kept coming up. Again and again.
From different students. Different experiences. Different stages of their journeys.

Dr. Cristy Tower-Gilchrist.

When a professor is nominated once, it speaks to impact. When they’re nominated multiple times, independently, by students who have each experienced that impact firsthand, it tells a much bigger story. It tells a story of consistency.

Across every nomination, the themes were clear. Dr. Tower-Gilchrist is not only an exceptional educator, but someone who genuinely cares about her students as individuals. She teaches rigorous courses like Human Anatomy and Physiology, yet creates an environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and confident in their ability to succeed.

Students describe her as approachable, thoughtful, and deeply invested. She remembers what they are struggling with. She follows up. She makes time. But her impact doesn’t stop at teaching.

As a Pre-Nursing Club Advisor across both the Oxford and Atlanta campuses, a TA mentor, research mentor, and academic guide, Dr. Tower-Gilchrist plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ academic and professional journeys. She helps students navigate complex transitions, from early coursework to admission into nursing programs, providing guidance every step of the way.

For many, she is more than a professor. She is a mentor who stays connected long after the class ends.

One former student, now a registered nurse, credits Dr. Tower-Gilchrist with helping shape her path into the profession. Another shared how her support and recommendation opened doors to transformative opportunities. Others spoke about the comfort of knowing they had someone in their corner—someone who believed in them, advocated for them, and helped them see their own potential.

Even in high-pressure academic environments, she creates space for growth without fear. Students are never made to feel rushed or embarrassed. Instead, they are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and develop confidence in their abilities. And perhaps most telling of all, the words used to describe her repeat themselves:

Supportive.
Dedicated.
Genuine.
Present.

These are not one-time impressions. They are patterns.

Dr. Tower-Gilchrist represents what higher education can and should be—an environment where students are challenged, supported, and inspired to grow not just academically, but personally and professionally. When five different voices tell the same story, it’s no longer just a nomination. It’s a testament.
