Behind the screens of institutional data and reporting, some of the most impactful leaders in higher education quietly shape the culture of their campuses. At Brenau University, Claudia George, Director of Research and Planning, is doing exactly that.
While her role centers on data analysis and institutional planning, George’s influence reaches far beyond spreadsheets and reports. Colleagues describe her as a community builder, mentor, and advocate for students, someone whose commitment to connection and service strengthens the entire Brenau community.
George’s work in institutional research provides valuable insights that help faculty and staff better understand student needs and challenges. By translating data into meaningful information, she helps the university make informed decisions that support student success and persistence toward graduation.
“My work in institutional research provides a glimpse into how data can create a common interest in helping students persist to graduation,” George shared. “Understanding data and the challenges students face can help our community of faculty and staff make informed decisions that directly support our students’ success and career outcomes.”
But George’s impact extends far beyond her professional responsibilities.
She has been deeply involved in campus initiatives that bring students, faculty, and staff together. As a former co-chair of the Campus Connections Committee and member of the Staff Development Committee, she has helped foster opportunities for collaboration and community building across campus.
One of her most visible initiatives was launching a campus running group, which brings members of the Brenau community together each week to connect outside the classroom and office. Her passion for wellness and work-life balance has inspired many around her, and she was recognized with Brenau’s Wellness Points competition award and the 2023 Hagerman-Thompson Staff Excellence Award.
George also dedicates time to supporting students directly. Through the university’s Friendship Program, she mentored a student from Panama as they navigated life at Brenau. Today, she serves as advisor to the Hispanic/Latino Student Association, where her Spanish language skills and cultural connection provide meaningful support for students.
Her commitment to mentorship extends into academic opportunities as well. While serving as an officer in Phi Kappa Phi, George regularly sent personal reminders to students about fellowships and study abroad grants, ensuring they did not miss opportunities that could shape their future.
A U.S. Army Reserve veteran and a double alumna of Brenau University, George continues to pursue professional development through certifications and webinars, demonstrating her dedication to lifelong learning and institutional excellence.
Whether analyzing data that guides university decisions, encouraging colleagues through wellness initiatives, or mentoring students finding their place on campus, Claudia George exemplifies the spirit of a Higher Ed Hero.
