The Senate announced that it has passed a bipartisan resolution dedicating February 3-9, 2025 to celebrate the invaluable role of Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU) in providing higher education opportunities that shape future leaders while preserving Indigenous heritage, culture, and languages.
TCUs serve students from over 230 federally recognized tribes across more than 90 campuses in 16 states. These institutions offer high-quality, culturally relevant education and contribute to workforce development in some of the most underserved regions of the country. U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) led this initiative to honor the achievements of TCU students, educators, and communities.
Colleges and universities nationwide are encouraged to support and recognize TCU students, faculty, and alumni through events, discussions, or partnerships.
Senator Heinrich said in a press release, “This resolution recognizes the vital role of Tribal colleges and universities in creating opportunities for the next generation of Tribal leaders, upholding Tribal educational sovereignty, and preparing Native students for careers they can build their families around in their home communities.”
This designation highlights the vital role of TCUs in advancing educational equity and Tribal educational sovereignty while formally recognizing their contributions to higher education and encouraging nationwide support for their mission.
